Painting TPU

Painting TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) can be a bit challenging due to its flexible and non-porous nature. However, with proper surface preparation and the right type of paint, it is possible to achieve satisfactory results. Here are some steps you can follow to paint TPU:

Clean the surface: Ensure that the TPU surface is clean and free from any dirt, oils, or contaminants. You can use mild soap and water or isopropyl alcohol to clean the surface. Let it dry completely before proceeding.

Sanding: Lightly sand the TPU surface with fine-grit sandpaper. This will provide some texture to help the paint adhere better. Be gentle so as not to damage or deform the TPU.

Primer: Apply a primer specifically designed for use on plastics or flexible surfaces. The primer will create a better bond between the TPU and the paint. Follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding drying time.

Paint: Choose a paint that is suitable for use on flexible materials or plastics. Spray paint or airbrushing can be good options. Apply thin and even coats to avoid drips or pooling. Allow each coat to dry before applying the next layer. Multiple thin coats are usually better than one thick coat.

Clear coat (optional): If desired, you can apply a clear coat on top of the paint to provide additional protection and gloss. Again, choose a clear coat that is compatible with flexible materials.

Drying and curing: Allow the painted TPU to dry and cure according to the paint manufacturer's instructions. This may involve leaving it to air dry for a specific duration or using heat to accelerate the curing process.

Keep in mind that the success of painting TPU will depend on factors such as the type and quality of paint used, the surface preparation, and the flexibility of the TPU material itself. It is recommended to test the paint on a small, inconspicuous area of the TPU before painting the entire surface.
